Every year, truck accidents take the lives of thousands of people across the United States. Intersections are one of the most common places for accidents to occur involving trucks. In fact, according to the Department of Transportation, intersection-related accidents are responsible for around 50% of all truck accidents.
One of the leading causes of fatal truck accidents at intersections is failure to yield the right-of-way. This can happen when a driver is distracted or simply not paying attention.
Another common cause is speeding through an intersection. Trucks require longer stopping distances than passenger vehicles, so it’s essential that they slow down sufficiently before entering an intersection.
A third cause is running red lights or stop signs. When drivers fail to stop traffic control devices at intersections, they can crash into other vehicles that do have the right-of-way to travel through. Poor weather conditions can also contribute to fatal trucking accidents at intersections by reducing visibility and making roads slippery.
