Iola, KS (August 18, 2023) – A bus accident reported in Iola sent several victims to area hospitals with injuries. The crash was reported on Thursday, August 17, at around 1:00 a.m.
Reports provided by the Kansas Highway Patrol show that a prison bus was transporting 21 Topeka Correctional Facility residents on US Highway 169 as part of a work program when they were involved in a crash with a semi-truck during the early morning hours.
Authorities rushed to the scene and immediately shut off the southeast Kansas roadway near the intersection of Oregon Road.
A total of nine people suffered injuries due to the crash. The driver of the bus was transported to a hospital in the Kansas City area for the treatment of serious injuries. An unknown number of additional victims were transported to local hospitals.
At this time, the incident is being investigated.
