Teutopolis, IL – Five Killed in Fatal Truck Wreck Reported on I-70 near US-40

Teutopolis, IL (October 1, 2023) – A fatal motor vehicle accident reported in the Teutopolis area on Friday claimed the lives of several people, including two children.

At around 9:25 p.m. on September 29, the Effingham County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene of an automobile collision on Interstate 70.

According to official reports, multiple vehicles, including one semi-truck, collided on the interstate just east of Effingham. The incident prompted the closure of the interstate near US Highway 40.

The involved semi-truck spilled anhydrous ammonia on the roadway. As a result of the leak of the hazardous materials, authorities prompted an evacuation in the area.

Five people, including two children, were fatally injured as a result of the crash.

Five additional people were airlifted and flown to local hospitals for emergency treatment.

At this time, the incident is being investigated.
