According to official reports, a semi-truck and a pickup truck were involved in a crash on the westbound side of Interstate 475. The impact of the crash caused the pickup truck to get trapped underneath the semi-truck and catch on fire.
Authorities arrived at the scene and close down the roadway just after the Interstate 75 southbound interchange. The driver of the second vehicle became trapped and had to be extricated by firefighters.
Medics were called to care for the victim and transported them to Toledo Hospital, where they underwent treatment for serious injuries.
At this time, the incident is being investigated.
We hope the victim who suffered injuries in this accident is able to recover quickly.
In the years leading up to 2020, the United States experienced a decline in traffic-related fatalities, including those involving semi-trucks. This positive trend continued for three consecutive years, providing some relief for motorists across the country. Unfortunately, recent crash data and statistics concerning semi-truck accidents reveal a concerning increase in the number of truck accidents that take place.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 2021 witnessed the highest number of traffic deaths in the past 16 years. Specifically focusing on the increase in accidents involving big trucks, the figures show a staggering 13% rise compared to 2020.
While big rig accidents may appear infrequent, the reality, as highlighted by NHTSA data, paints a different picture. In fact, crashes involving semi-trucks occur approximately once every 15 minutes. These accidents often have far more serious consequences on motorists sharing the roadway due to the fact that the vehicles are much larger than others. As a result, it is incredibly common to see people suffer from traumatic brain injuries, internal organ injuries, and other severe injuries due to these accidents.
